Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
Being a parent is a wonderful, beautiful, rewarding, and, at times, challenging role. You may have days where you feel exhausted, defeated, or even helpless. These days may be more frequent if you have a young child who struggles with challenging behaviors and you struggle with knowing exactly how to manage them.
Luckily, you do not have to navigate these challenges on your own. Guidance and support are available to you through Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, also known as PCIT.
Support for Challenging Behaviors
PCIT is an evidence-based therapy for young children ages 2–7 and their caregivers who are experiencing behaviors that can disrupt everyday family life.
- Tantrums
- Defiance
- Aggression
- Hyperactivity
- Difficulty Following Directions
What Is PCIT?
Drawing from attachment theory, social learning theory, and authoritative parenting theory, PCIT focuses on improving the parent-child relationship while teaching caregivers effective behavior-management skills. The goal is not simply to stop a difficult behavior in the moment. It is to help caregivers create a stronger, more secure relationship while developing clear, consistent, and practical ways to respond to their child.
The Two Phases of PCIT
Treatment progresses through two structured phases that first strengthen connection and then introduce effective direction, limits, and behavior-management skills.
Child-Directed Interaction
Parents strengthen their relationship with their child through positive, child-led play. This phase helps caregivers practice skills that communicate attention, warmth, encouragement, and enjoyment while allowing the child to guide the interaction.
Parent-Directed Interaction
Parents learn effective ways to give directions, establish appropriate limits, and respond consistently to challenging behaviors. This phase helps caregivers create greater clarity, predictability, and confidence within everyday family routines.
Real-Time Support Through Live Coaching
A key feature of PCIT is live coaching. Rather than only discussing parenting situations after they happen, a therapist provides real-time guidance to caregivers while they interact with their child.
Sessions are typically held weekly and commonly occur over approximately 14–16 weeks. Caregivers continue practicing their new skills at home between sessions, while the therapist tracks progress throughout treatment.
PCIT From the Comfort of Your Home
At Thomas Integrative Psychotherapy, we offer PCIT exclusively through telehealth. A virtual setting offers the advantages of convenience, accessibility, and comfort for both caregivers and children.
Families often feel more comfortable interacting in their own homes. This can allow the therapist to observe a more natural and honest picture of the parent-child interaction without the distractions or pressures of an unfamiliar environment.
